Short Break to the Coast

We were a bit ‘stuck’ a few weeks ago of where to take our motorhome for a quick weekend away. Living in the middle of Yorkshire we are pretty well situated for most places, we can get to either coast in about 2 hours and the Dales and Lakes are pretty close too. We just wanted to throw a few things together and set off to have a bit of R & R in a field somewhere with no stress and minimum travel. So we decided to head over to the East coast. Not Robin Hoods Bay (our favourite place on the East) but to Bridlington. It’s been a while since I have been there and my husband hadn’t been at all. The weather was grey and journey around the York ring road at 5.00pm on Friday was not the best idea we have ever had.
We stayed at Flamborough head in a campsite within walking distance of the town. The site was called The Grange and was a nice flat site with good toilet block facilities and within walking distance of some really nice pubs and the cliffs (not a good combination, cliffs and beer!) but a good bracing walk on a sunny afternoon.

We ate at The Seabirds in Flamborough one evening. They have a lovely airy eating area towards the back of the restaurant and the menu is diverse with lots of local fish dishes on, all really well cooked and presented beautifully.

We were only in Flamborough for two nights, just long enough to enjoy the great pubs and restaurants on the doorstep.

Try walking from the campsite to the cliffs, it’s about a two mile walk, but well worth it once you get there. The views are great and the clifftops are so impressive, you can see the light house at Flamborough head from here, and the sea seems to stretch forever – on a good day!

We did take a short trip into Bridlington, to be honest it was a grey rainy day and this alongwith the tired and flakey façade of Bridlington harbour it didn’t make for one of our most memorable motorhome stops. I’m sure if the sun was out and the promenade amusements and dated shops had had a lick of paint the whole scene would have been a lot brighter. As it stood we retreated quickly back to the camp site with several Saturday papers and a bottle of wine.
