If you fancy a break up in the Lake District this summer, we found a great little site to stay at. Right on the edge of Threkeld is a little farm called Burns Farm. They have a nice flat area with good shower facilities and even WI-FI.
Only a stones throw from Keswick (if you can throw a stone 4 or 5 miles) it’s easy to walk to if you are feeling energetic. We took the scenic path from the campsite to Keswick which was quite hilly – but then this is the Lakes! We walked past Castlerigg standing stones which are a must to see. They have an eerie atmosphere to them and as they are situated in a basin on top of a steep hill surrounded by a wall of mountains the views go on forever and forever. Once you arrive here the worst is over on your walk into Keswick, from here the walk is down hill.
We arrived into Keswick on a beautiful sunny Saturday and found the market in full swing. There are a number of stalls selling local produce from cheese to meat so a picnic by the river was definitely on the cards.
Walking back you can follow the old railway which is considerably flatter but much further. I don’t mind admitting once I got back to the motorhome after this walk I had to have a sit down and a chocolate biscuit!
We had a great day out at Muncaster Castle (complete with alleged ghost and owls) and Ravensglass, a lovely seaside village. Stopping in at Coniston on the way back we had a full day sightseeing.
I can fully recommend a break in the Lakes, there are lots of things to do and if you are lucky and land on some good weather it’s a great break away, as long as you don’t mind the hills!
